ABOUT NORTHLAND
People deserve to be understood before they are advised.
Built from a life that began on a farm.
Don Tiegs grew up living the farm life and saw firsthand the pressures farm families carry. Over time, more specialists and specialized services became available. Many offered real value, but each often addressed one individual pain point. The advice did not always connect.
Don saw an opportunity to create a different kind of resource — not a one-stop shop and not a replacement for CPAs, attorneys, financial advisors, or other specialists. Northland would be a place where people could be heard, where concerns could be organized, and where multiple possibilities could be explored with the full situation in mind.
That same need exists for business owners. Their financial lives are often inseparable from the companies they built, the people who depend on them, and the legacy they hope to leave.
THE FIVE PROMISES
What you can expect from Northland.

FOUNDER
Meet Don Tiegs.
Don Tiegs
Founder, Northland Financial Solutions — Farm Legacy & Exit Planning Consultant
Don Tiegs grew up understanding that a farm is never just land — it is a family's livelihood, identity, and legacy, often built across generations and carrying decisions that no single advisor, product, or conversation can fully address alone. That understanding is what led him to found Northland Financial Solutions, where he works with farm families and business owners nationwide to help them move from financial complexity toward greater clarity and confidence.
Don has held his insurance license since 2006 and brings nearly two decades of experience working on complex, high-stakes planning cases. Prior to founding Northland, he served for twelve years as Advanced Markets Director for a large insurance brokerage, where he worked alongside agents, CPAs, and attorneys across the country on cases involving business owners, farm families, and high-income individuals navigating significant tax, retirement, and legacy challenges. That experience — seeing firsthand where disconnected advice left people without a clear path forward — is what led him to build a practice centered on bringing the full picture into one conversation.
Don specializes in farm legacy and exit planning, helping clients navigate the interconnected challenges of succession, capital gains reduction, retirement income design, estate equalization, life insurance, long-term care, charitable planning, and business continuation. He is the creator of The TIEGS™ Plan — the Tax-Integrated Equity Growth Strategy — a proprietary framework that helps qualified high-income farmers and business owners explore whether current tax exposure can be redirected toward long-term retirement value. He also developed the Tax Legacy Compass™, a specialized approach for owners of highly appreciated assets who want to explore capital-gain reduction, income design, charitable impact, and legacy preservation before or after a major transaction.
Don is not a CPA, attorney, or registered investment advisor. His role is to listen, educate, help clients see the full picture of their financial situation, and connect them with the right specialists at the right time. He believes that people deserve to be understood before they are advised — and that the most important financial conversations are the ones that begin before a decision becomes urgent.
